Reflection

The small clipping of a newspaper above was released on May 7th, 1945 and reads "War is Over in Europe!"

The second newspaper clipping was released on September 2nd, 1945 when Japan surrendered after the second nuclear bomb was dropped on Japan. The war finally was at peace and the Allied Powers had won.

From start to finish, this silent heroes project was truly a great learning experience for both myself and my partner. Both he and I previously knew a lot about WW2 but had never researched deeply into a single person especially one who was born in Pennsylvania. Looking into Lawrence Bekelesky's past taught us better research skills and broadened our knowledge on how the US military acted throughout WW2. One thing we did not know much prior to this project was how the US offered families the choice of what to do with their lost ones. The Bekelesky family choose to bury Lawrence in the US Normandy American Cemetery. One of the most important sources we used was the 29th Division Association Website  and Fold3 / FamilySearch.  Overall, this project was very intriguing for me and only deepened my respect for veterans who have served to protect our nation.
