Lawrence Bekelesky was born on the 21st of June in 1920 to Katherine Kiniski and John Bekeleski. His father, John, worked as a repair man for a rubber factory in Akron. His mother maintained the household. Corporal Bekelesky was born Osceola Mills, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, USA and later moved to Akron, Ohio. Bekelesky enlisted in the military at the age of 21 on 22 Apr 1942 in Akron, Ohio. He would have been 19 when Nazi Germany invaded Poland. and World War 2 began.

Moving West
Between 1923 to 1928 the Bekeleski family moved to Akron, Ohio in Summit County. In 1940 the population for Summit County was 339,405 and Akron had a population of 244,791. The family ended up staying in Ohio and throughout the war, letters were sent back and forth from Europe to Ohio.
